About Our Alliance
Our Mission
Protecting North County, One Home at a Time
The North County Firewise Alliance is a community-driven organization dedicated to reducing wildfire risk across North County San Diego. We are an officially designated Firewise USA® community — a program of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) — which means our members qualify for property insurance discounts under California's "Safer from Wildfires" regulations.
Firewise USA® is a free, voluntary program that encourages and assists neighbors to work together in improving wildfire safety and resilience in their neighborhoods. The program provides a simple framework for organizing, planning, and taking action to reduce wildfire risks around our homes.
Homeowners in a Firewise USA®-designated community benefit from home fire insurance discounts. Our community members also enjoy periodic social gatherings to educate and build on our community connections — meetings and educational get-togethers held once every three months.

Retired Fire Chief
Alliance Founder & Program Lead
A neighbor and retired Fire Chief with decades of experience in wildland-urban interface fire behavior has agreed to lead this effort. His professional expertise guides our community's approach to defensible space, home hardening, and emergency preparedness — translating fire service knowledge into practical action for homeowners.
Community Volunteers
Neighborhood Organizers & Educators
Our volunteer team is made up of dedicated North County homeowners who coordinate workshops, manage community outreach, maintain our online platform, and ensure our Firewise USA® certification is renewed annually. Every volunteer is a neighbor invested in the safety of our shared community.
The Program
What Is Firewise USA®?
Firewise USA® is a free, voluntary program managed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that helps communities reduce their wildfire risk through education, planning, and action. Designation requires an annual community investment in fire risk reduction activities and documentation submitted to NFPA.
Community Assessment
A wildfire risk assessment is conducted for the community, identifying the most significant hazards and vulnerabilities.
Action Plan
The community develops a Firewise Action Plan outlining specific steps to reduce risk — from defensible space to evacuation routes.
Annual Investment
Members collectively invest at least $35 per dwelling unit per year in documented fire risk reduction activities.
NFPA Designation
Upon meeting all requirements, NFPA grants official Firewise USA® designation — renewed annually.
Insurance Certificate
Members receive a Firewise Certificate to present to their insurance carrier as proof of community-level risk reduction.
CA Discount Eligibility
California's "Safer from Wildfires" law requires insurers to offer discounts to property owners in Firewise USA® communities.

Our History
How We Got Here
Alliance Founded
A group of concerned North County homeowners, led by a retired Fire Chief, came together to address the growing wildfire threat in our region.
Firewise USA® Application
The alliance submitted its first Firewise USA® community application to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), beginning the formal certification process.
Certified Firewise Community
North County Firewise Alliance received official Firewise USA® designation — qualifying members for California's "Safer from Wildfires" insurance discount program.
Community Platform Launched
We launched our online platform to connect homeowners, share resources, and coordinate community preparedness activities across North County neighborhoods.
Expanded Outreach
Partnerships with CAL FIRE, the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, and local HOAs expanded our reach to hundreds of additional households.
Annual Recertification
Completed annual Firewise USA® recertification, maintaining our community's designation and ensuring continued insurance discount eligibility for members.
